Well Deserved Day For Mom

While often hear people say they don’t believe in holidays like Mothers Day and Fathers Day because of the commercialization and that they shouldn’t have special days like these throughout the country, it has always been a special day for me. In a way we should respect the fact that our mothers are perhaps the most important people in our lives, after all where would we be without them. And I suppose there is some truth to the commercialization of it all but I love my mom and I think it is nice to have a special day to honor her and all that she has done!

With that in mind it is time to start looking at reasonable gifts, like women cards. This whole notion of just sending flowers and candies every year is what gets me about the commercialization, I like doing something different and unique for my mom. Recently, I have been on quest to get back into the writing of notecards and because of this I have been seeking different types of boxed note cards that suit me and are representative of my personality. Why did this quest start? Good question I am tired of the dumb-ing down of America. I mean most American these days cannot write well at all. This is an art form in it self, one that our founding Fathers were extremely proficient in and so I believe I can be a better writer, but you have to practice and email doesn’t cut it. After all, handwriting is part of the art form. So I now practice using floral stationery cards like these:

Another key is to find good stationery. This is not necessarily just good looking stationery, but stationery that you can write well on with a fountain pen. Yes you should get a fountain pen to practice! (but not required). I have found that a thick stock works well for such writing. It can’t bleed through to the back and you want the feathering to be almost non-existent and to write a nice fine line. Here is some of the stock I used and it also makes an excellent present for mom for those looking for a nice unique present for women as well. Another aspect of stationery cards is that the gift can be used over and over again instead of just for the first few days and then thrown out with the trash after a week. Your mom can literally use this gifts for months to come and may even ask to buy more! Three or four boxes of flower cards really should last a few months for just personal notes. But if you are sending thank yous out after a party, then they may only last a day or two.

I really like the floral patterns on these cards and I have already ordered them twice. I got the sunflower stationery and the flower cards. I like the bright orange color. But I would encourage anyone looking for a unique present for mom to consider these for birthday gifts and Mothers Day presents as well a just a way to start writing again personally.

Displaying Your Patriotism

This is perhaps the best way I have seen for anyone to display their patriotism. I just bought one of these for my office so I figured I would do them a favor and write an outstanding review. Only because it is true. So this is actually a quite remarkable piece and I say that for a few reasons, the quality is really nice. It is printed on a really thick thick paper(I mean thick!) and it is letterpress printed and it is the Star Spangled Banner. So when I say it is letterpress printed I mean the letterpress technique of inking a plate and then pushing the metal or plastic plate deep into the paper with a really old platen press (like a clam shell). The pressure on these presses is adjusted to smash the paper to a certain depth and look and feel tat is just right for the viewer(us). Needless to say it takes time and patience and an old press. This piece is 3 colors. So you have to set up each different part for each run and then print. The result is this unmistakable and beautiful star spangled banner print that highlights those famous words of our National Anthem. This is really one cool patriotic picture I would be pleased to display in an room of my home or office.

Great Fishing Gifts For Men

Every one has a friend who is an avid angler or at least most people do. Any angler would appreciate these unique fishing gifts for men and women. Being the fisherman in our family and as soon as I saw these I knew I would want one. I would love to get these for a birthday gift this year. These are really unique fishing gifts and you won’t find them an retail stores either. My favorite is the “catch”! Another interesting point is thay are letterpress printed which is an art form in and of itself.

A great bass fishing gift. Love it! You might be thinking “I’ll never use stationer” but think of it another way. It might be a great idea for you to pick up the pen and hone those writing skills instead of your knife! You could even slip a sexy note in your wife pocket book to find later that day! And what about a sympathy or thank you note. When was the last time you wrote one of those! These make great birthday or fathers day gifts aw well and they are relatively inexpensive!

A Great Gift For Mom This Year

I just came across a great gift for mom. It is some of the most beautiful flower cards. I’m in love with the assortment and the amount of colors and flowers that are included in the selection. I can tell their printing on nice paper and that they are very high quality yet they are so inexpensive!

Knowing that they are letterpress printed, I would expect them to be very expensive but I notice that their only about a dollar a card. That’s a total deal. This year I will probably get some of these cards for my mother for mothers day. They would also be good for birthday though or even for my sister. Usually all go down to the grocery store at the last minute and by the standard card for about $4.00. That’s a total rip off. So this year I’m trying to plan ahead and get are something that she will really like. I know she likes gardening and she has lots of flowers and loves roses as well. Floral stationery will be perfect and the great thing is, they don’t need to be taken care of.

In fact, one of my favorite flowers is the sunflower. They even have a sunflower stationery available as well as a poppy, dandelion and a bouquet of floral stationery. The great thing about stationery is it forces you to keep in touch with your friends and family. If you have a sitting on the desk your more inclined to use it and not having it. So I might even get some for myself so I can be better at keeping in touch with friends and family.

I may write one or two notecards a year, but overall I haven’t been good about keeping in touch with my friends and my family. I will see them around Easter and at Christmas, but it’s always good to write a note like I used to do in high school well as a way a boarding school. A handwritten note just says something different that says something more and I think they appreciate the sincerity of a note card.

The great thing as I can get to a three boxes and only spend $30 are $45.00 and be done with my mother’s day gift. If a got her flowers, the flowers would be dead in about two days or at the most, a week. This way my mom can keep writing and using stationery all year long and always think of me.

iPad Story Book For Children

We are always on the lookout for the next children’s book or actually we now use the iPad® for kids apps or story books or even our iPhone®, but our eyes are open to new items besides games. I think stories are more interesting for children and they can learn from them. So many games are just games and there is little benefit to the game. I have no issue with games that help children learn to read obviously, but working with your child and helping them learn I can only do with a story book. Interestingly enough, I discovered a new iPad kids app that is a story book for children. It is about the weather and introduces your child to four new fun weather characters. I found it at Childrens Media and it is a great story for children under 6 years old.

In 1968 Burke Johnson set out with an idea inspired by afternoon on the front porch watching a thunderstorm, to create a story book for his children, ages of three and five at the time. The work that emerged from his imagination was originally called “Randy Rain”. After months of work and illustration this original book was finished and he read it to his children who loved it. Inspired he allowed some other kindergarten classes to read the book and it was a success with the children. Deciding to submit the work to publishers who subsequently turned him down at every corner was enough to stop further efforts to publish the book and Mr. Johnson was offered another job thus moving his family. The original work was lost during the move only rough drafts and sketches survive today.

Now the grandchildren are part of the Johnson family, Randy Rain became a topic of discussion and son Taylor Johnson was committed to reviving the imaginative book that he had read as a child so his children could read it. Renamed SkyPals™, Johnson thought the best format for the new book would be in the form of an app for the new iPad which would allow narration and sound effects to enhance the experience. Graco Pack and Play and Cribs For Kids

These are some startling facts so I am re-posting this to see if anyone can help or knows of a family that may need a free or inexpensive crib. I know Graco was working with the project in other areas with baby jumpers and bouncers including the Pack and Play.

Many families with extremely limited income and little or no extended family support make do with older, unsafe cribs or no cribs at all. Some families who have heard about the “Back to Sleep” campaign, which has been credited with reducing the rate of SIDS deaths by 50 %, cannot afford a crib for their baby. SIDS rates among African American infants are three times that of the general population. We must strengthen and extend our education programs into these communities with hands-on, on-site programs that can be implemented in homes, daycare centers, churches, community centers, schools and hospitals; and involve local civic, service and social groups to assist in these efforts. “Cribs for Kids” is true hands on program designed to provide both an appropriate sleeping environment-a crib-and education regarding safe sleep for babies to the families who most need the information.

The “Cribs for Kids” Project addresses specific situations dealing with socio-economic issues such as crib affordability and cultural practices such as co-sleeping and breastfeeding; and parenting skills such as smoking and appropriate childcare.

“Cribs for Kids” was developed in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to address the issue of babies dying when placed in unsafe sleeping environments. SIDS Mid-Atlantic is a partner in the “Cribs for Kids” campaign, and we are proud to say that no family who received a cribthrough this program has subsequently died.

To request a crib for a needy family, you must be a representative of a health department or a maternal child health agency in Maryland, Virginia or Washington D.C.
