wedding wednesday: art deco invitation inspiration

We’re excited about the release of our newest collection of letterpress wedding invitations - shipping to stores in early August.  For the next few weeks we’ll be giving you a sneak peek of the new designs and an inside look on what inspired Page Stationery’s founder and creative director Sue Corral in creating these pieces.

With Page’s recent growth in in-house capabilities, our new collection expands beyond letterpress. We’re thrilled to add foil printing into our mix.  We asked Sue to let us in on her jumping off point for the new catherine + blake letterpress wedding suite.

With letterpress printing, it’s hard to get a metallic ink to give a true shine, so I was really excited to incorporate foil printing into the new wedding line. As I sat down to work on catherine + blake, the gold foil gave me an Art Deco inspiration.

art deco inspirationArt Deco may have begun in Paris in the 1920s, but as an ex-New Yorker, when I think of Art Deco I think of the top of the Chrysler Building. It’s hard not to picture the way the top spire gleams on one of those perfectly clear and sunny New York days.

Gold Wedding Invitation

I’ll be honest, I am not usually drawn to the art deco style – it can be a bit too elaborate for my tastes – so, I tried to create a modern interpretation of the style, one that represented a fresh take on old New York elegance and glamour.

Michael Kors & Lance LePere, Where Are The Wedding Invitations?

Ok, we all heard the fabulous news that Michael Kors and Lance LePere are getting married, but besides the fact that they are the hottest topic because they are two men getting married, what else could all the media outlets be missing??? Obviously, the most overwhelming subject matter here is what wedding invitations they are they ordering? As it should be with any notable wedding!

My choice for the best and most luscious wedding invite would be these succulent letterpress wedding invitations from Page Stationery. Michael Kors isn’t going to skimp a bit with style and quite frankly I can easily see Page Stationery Creative Director,  Sue Corral, right up there on the set with Kors and Klum judging the Project Runway show. Afterall, her style is right in line with Kors, keeping it simple and elegant. God is in the details, right?

Here are a few examples I would have the couple take a look at before they handed everything over to Kate Spade or Vera Wang and her sub letterpress line of invitations at William Arthur. You get the picture?

Why You Need To Have Letterpress Wedding Invitations

Why You Need To Have Letterpress Wedding Invitations
If you want to have a day that will be forever remembered why not add letterpress wedding invitations onto your wedding must do list. For most couples, a wedding is one of the biggest occasions of their life together.

Planning the perfect wedding takes time, and there is a huge amount to remember. Not only are there the guests to think about, but also outfits, food, music, and hotel bookings among many other things. With so much to think about it is easy to see why people can sometimes rush certain things like wedding invites or custom stationery.

Often in a hurry people will decide to print their own wedding invitations, or will buy some premade ones from a store. Whilst these are acceptable, wouldn’t it be nice for your guests to receive something personal, attractive, and formal in the post? They will not only be very impressed, but it will also begin build up the excitement and anticipation of your big day.

High quality letterpressed wedding invitations are not only stunningly attractive, but are also very functional. Letterpressing is an old printing technique that involves the letters being set on a plate in reverse. The press is inked and pressed down hard onto the surface of the paper, leaving a deep indentation which gives a beautiful 3 dimensional quality to the print.

These unique wedding invitations can be found in a whole host of different print shapes and styles. The paper they are printed on is extremely high in quality, and is also available in many different colors. Whether you want traditional white, or exuberant marble there is something to suit every taste.

You have control over the design of the invites so will be able to choose the wording used, the paper used, and can even choose to have commemorative crests or borders added to the design. The printer then deals with the rest of the process so you can continue planning your big day until the finished invites drop though your mailbox.

Something that makes these invites even better value is that they normally come as part of a wedding pack. Inside this pack will also be reply cards, and a set of envelopes for quick and easy response. This makes it quick and simple for your guests to send their replies back to you.

These invitations can be kept as a memento of your special day because they are so strong and long lasting. Every couple wants to make their wedding special, and giving your guests elegant wedding invitations is just one small detail that can add to your wedding magic.

New Wedding Invitation Trends For 2011

Believe it or not letterpress invitations are extremely popular these days. Over the course of the last ten years the interest in engraved invitations has waned and the popularity of letterpress printed invitations began to take hold. Why? Partially because of the influence of Martha Stewart and her wedding magazine, Martha Stewart Weddings. The magazine routinely featured letterpress wedding invitations by hot new designers who were eager to hop on this trend. The trend has been holding steady now for the ten to twelve years but it seems like this fad is about to get blasted. Just like any economic market that heats up it is bound to have a cooling period right behind it. Just look at the influx of new designers and people all over the country having an interest in letterpress printing. There will be a point in the near future this letterpress wedding invitations bubble may pop and we revert back to the mean.

Stylish stationery will always have its place and letterpress will always be around as long as those old presses withstand the test of time.

Creating Letterpress Wedding Invitations That Are Right For You

Creating Letterpress Wedding Invitations That Are Right For You
The key to finding the best letterpress wedding invitations is to let your creativity come to life and get those creative juices flowing. You don’t really need to know what you are looking for, let it come to you. Why waste your time looking at Crane’s invitations if you are considering a modern wedding invitation? They are best know and specialize in more traditional invitations. Some of the better and more contemporary and modern wedding invitation designs come from more recent letterpress printers who are designers and run their own boutique letterpress company. This is the cutting edge in wedding invitation design and the best place to begin your search for a modern wedding invitation and other ideas for the ceremony.

Options abound for different types of wedding invitations and it is easy to get side tracked into looking at the many options available. This can end up costing you time and money and get your wedding schedule messed up as well. You don’t want those invitations to go out late do you? The best thing to do is to stay focused on the product that you want. For instance, decide if you are having a traditional wedding or if your wedding will be more modern. This should help in the basic sense that you can just not look at the invitations that are more traditional and focus on the companies to that specialize in more modern wedding invitations.

There are many letterpress invitations designs that you can choose from or you may design your own. Nothing is impossible when custom ordering, though do keep cost in mind if you are on a budget. Contrasting bold colors and geometric designs work very well for modern wedding invitations. You can even find invitations with ribbons or other embellishments incorporated into them. Choose from invitations with lacy designs, modern fonts, and unusual layouts.

Your wedding invitation is something that you want your guests to remember. One way to do this is to make the envelope appealing to the eye. This can be done using several motifs or a simple line for the use of special typography and monogram. If this is done you want to make sure that you also hand address the envelopes for a more distinctive look.

As you will find there are quite a few invitations available online. Some of these may be fine as they are, but some will require additional customization as we mentioned earlier. The goal here is to not have something that everybody else has. So to make sure you can create a unique design that applies to your taste and values that you instill as a new couple. Once you decide on the theme or color scheme for your wedding it will be easier to design your wedding invitations and decide what type of paper you want to use and as well as the thickness of the paper and composition.

By using the modern wedding invitation you are breaking with tradition which is fine. Just realize that many parts of your wedding may follow this same theme of breaking with tradition. So other parts of the ceremony may be unique. Like the way the flowers are done or the cake, these could be really modern as well. But this what makes a wedding so fun. Your are creating an invitation that speaks to your personally. You have the ability to make it creative and fun and end up with a invitation that you will cherish forever. So have fun and relax when you decide to order your elegant wedding invitations.
